The shorthand “fiber” refers to the high-speed fiber optic cables we’re installing to bring data to your home or business. In the industry, “fiber” is sometimes used casually when referring to gigabit-bandwidth internet services.

In order to recover the cost of building fiber, we are asking new shared gigabit customers to commit to three years of service.

Since bandwidth is rarely ever utilized fully for gigabit access, HBPW can reduce customer costs by bundling multiple connections together into a “shared gigabit” connection. The result is the same great, high speed service for a lower monthly fee.

The Enhanced Plan offers A few things that may be of interest to some businesses.

• Static IP Address. Static IP addresses are sometimes needed for phone systems or VPNs. Contact your IT person to ask if you need it.
• Service Level Agreement (SLA). An SLA gives guarantees about the reliability of the service, and credits your account if they don’t meet that level of service. It is a commitment by BPW of what you can expect. You can read their SLA and see if it is valuable to you.
• Priority Restoration and Enhanced Reliability. BPW will restore Enhanced customers first in the event of an outage. BPW will monitor these customers closely to ensure they’re getting the best service possible and avoid downtime.
• Proactive Communication. BPW is committed to communicating before issues arise as much as possible. We hope they do this for all customers, but they are only guaranteeing it for Enhanced customers to start.

Which tier is right for me?

If you want a great connection and top speed, both are great. If you can live without static IP and the service guarantees (SLA) from the higher tier, then stick with the lower one. Otherwise, spring for the higher one. Either way, this should be much better and cheaper than anything you have today.

Property owners that have multiple tenants may subscribe to the Multi Dwelling Unit (MDU) Option. This option allows the subscriber to connect other tenants (subsubscribers) to a single Shared Gigabit service. HBPW will provide a single Shared Holland Board of Public Works Gigabit service connection and the subscriber will be responsible for network connections to sub-subscriber. A maximum of 5 sub-subscribers is permitted. Check the Multi-Dwelling option, and we will contact you to work out the details.

Maybe. If your email is through an ISP like Comcast or AT&T, you may need to change your email address in time, although both have a process for maintaining that address after cancellation of service.

In the free standard installation, each building connected receives its signal to an Optical Line Terminal, which then passes the signal through a splitter (for multi-unit buildings). This signal then plugs into an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) in your location, which is is similar to a cable modem and has ethernet connectivity for local use. Our standard ONT includes routing, WiFi and firewall features. Individual residents and businesses may use their own WiFi routers or other networking equipment if desired.

The HBPW delivers fiber optic service to the basement of your building, called the DMARC or point of Demarcation. This is typically the location where your other utilities are delivered. From there, we connect to a power outlet and in-building ethernet cable to deliver service to your location. In-building cabling is your responsibility.

We offer a device with routing, firewall and WiFi as part of the service. You may need more equipment depending on your buildings needs, such as wifi extenders for business-grade network equipment. However, Internet speed is only as fast as your hardware. For businesses, you might need a new firewall or networking equipment to enjoy the maximum speeds. Some older devices or computers may also need upgrading. But even if you keep your existing hardware, you’ll likely notice a significant boost in speed.
