Heatwave Sprinkling Hold Off

Red, yellow, green meter showing green

The meter above indicates the likelihood of a Water Conservation Action Day. The meter may be green, yellow or red depending on current weather conditions and forcasts.

  • Green - No dry, hot weather in the forecast. Unlikely that a Water Conservation Action Day will be called.
  • Yellow - Conditions becoming hotter and/or drier. Look out for messages from Holland BPW about voluntarily limiting your sprinkling.
  • Red - Holland BPW has called for Water Conservation Action Days. Please limit or hold off on sprinkling these days to help conserve water.

Holland BPW’s Heatwave Sprinkling Hold Off helps our residential customers save water on hot, dry days. This initiative encourages water conservation and protects against costly infrastructure investments.

Why Conserve Water on Hot, Dry Days?

Our Water Treatment Plant, connected to Lake Michigan, has a maximum treatment capacity of 38.5 million gallons per day. On an average day, we treat approximately 13 million gallons. However, during hot, dry summer days, usage can reach close to 30 million gallons per day. During stretches of hot weather without rain, the plant can come close to its maximum capacity.

If Holland BPW nears the State of Michigan mandated threshold of our Water Treatment Plant, we will need to investigate additional investments in new infrastructure to increase our treatment capacity. This can be very costly for the infrequent need for increased capacity. We are confident that the Water Treatment Plant is appropriately sized for our service area and are dedicated to bringing our customers the best value. Maintaining the current size of the Water Treatment Plant or making smaller incremental changes to treatment capacity is the best option for our customers and water rates.
